It must test the full path from crawler access and index eligibility to answer quality, entity accuracy, citations and conversions.

This 45-step checklist helps you audit visibility across Google Search, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT Search, Microsoft-powered AI experiences and other answer-led platforms. It separates confirmed platform requirements from popular AI-search theories, so you can spend time on issues that affect discovery, understanding and trust.

No audit can guarantee a Google ranking, ChatGPT citation or AI recommendation. The purpose is to find preventable weaknesses, record a baseline and prioritize work that also improves the experience for real users.

What Does an AI SEO Audit Check?

An AI SEO audit checks whether search and AI systems can crawl important pages, index the correct URLs, interpret business entities, extract accurate answers, verify claims and cite useful source material. It also measures brand mentions, cited pages, AI referrals, qualified leads and factual errors across generated answers.

Traditional SEO remains the foundation. Google’s 2026 generative AI optimization guide says its AI features rely on core Search systems and do not require a separate technical SEO standard. For Google AI features, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet.

What Makes an AI SEO Audit Different?

A standard SEO audit asks whether a page can rank and attract clicks. An AI SEO audit adds four questions:

  1. Can AI-search crawlers and retrieval systems access the content?
  2. Can a useful passage answer a question accurately when separated from the rest of the page?
  3. Can the system verify the business, author and claims through consistent evidence?
  4. Can the business measure citations, mentions, referrals and assisted conversions?

The difference is not a replacement for SEO. It is a wider visibility and measurement layer.

Score every item using the same scale:

This score is a prioritization tool, not an AI ranking factor. A failed indexability check can matter more than several passed formatting checks.

Do not make “more AI mentions” the final goal. A citation can be useful for awareness but still fail to produce business value. Connect every audit priority with a user need and a measurable action.

2. Build a Buyer-Question and Prompt Set

Create a fixed set of questions based on real customer decisions. Include informational, comparison, commercial, local and brand queries.

Record the country, language, device or account context where relevant. The same prompt can produce different answers in different conditions.

3. Capture a Search and AI Visibility Baseline

Before changing the site, record:

  • Google and Bing impressions, clicks and top pages;
  • current rankings for priority non-brand and brand queries;
  • pages appearing in featured snippets or AI features where visible;
  • ChatGPT and other AI citations for the fixed prompt set;
  • AI referral sessions and conversions;
  • incorrect, outdated or missing brand statements.

One test is not a baseline. Repeat high-value prompts and record source changes over several dates.

4. Inventory Priority Pages and Entities

List the pages and entities closest to revenue or public trust. These commonly include the homepage, core services, products, categories, locations, pricing, comparison pages, contact information, author profiles and high-traffic articles.

For each page, record the canonical URL, owner, last review date, target intent and conversion action. For each entity, record the official name, description, locations, people, services and verified profiles.

Pass evidence: A page and entity inventory with clear ownership and review dates.

Part 2: Google Technical Eligibility

5. Check Googlebot Access in robots.txt

Confirm that robots.txt does not block the sections, CSS, JavaScript or other resources needed to understand priority pages. Test both the exact page and important supporting resources.

A robots.txt “allow” does not prove that the page is indexable. It only addresses crawling at that layer. Continue with status, canonical and robots-meta checks.

Pass evidence: Priority URLs and required resources are accessible to Googlebot by design.

6. Verify HTTP Status and Indexability

Every canonical priority page should normally return HTTP 200, contain indexable content and avoid accidental noindex directives. Check server responses rather than relying only on what the browser displays.

Google states that supporting links in AI Overviews and AI Mode must be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet. Its AI features documentation says there are no additional technical requirements beyond normal Search eligibility.

Pass evidence: Important canonical pages return 200 and are indexable in Search Console inspection.

7. Audit Canonicals and Duplicate URLs

Check whether parameters, print pages, HTTP/HTTPS versions, trailing-slash variants, faceted URLs or syndicated copies create competing versions. Confirm that internal links, sitemaps and canonical tags agree on the preferred URL.

Google’s 2026 Generative AI report assigns most page data to the canonical URL. Incorrect canonicalization can therefore affect both eligibility and measurement.

Pass evidence: One clear canonical URL per content item, supported by internal links and the sitemap.

8. Review XML Sitemaps and Discovery Paths

Include canonical, indexable URLs that you want search engines to find. Remove redirected, blocked, duplicate, soft-404 and noindex URLs. Check last-modified dates only if the system updates them accurately.

An XML sitemap is a discovery aid, not a substitute for crawlable internal links.

Pass evidence: Clean sitemaps with current canonical URLs and no systematic errors.

9. Test Rendered Content and Mobile Parity

Compare raw HTML, rendered HTML and the mobile page. Important answers, product details, author information and internal links should remain accessible after rendering. Do not place the only useful information inside an image, animation or interaction that requires a click.

Google uses mobile-first indexing, so missing mobile content can affect how the page is understood.

Pass evidence: Priority content and links appear in the rendered mobile version and crawl output.

10. Audit Snippet and Generative Controls

Check page-level and section-level controls such as nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex. These settings can limit how Google uses content in results and AI features.

Google’s snippet controls documentation explains that nosnippet blocks regular and featured snippets, while data-nosnippet excludes marked page sections. Do not remove a restriction until legal, privacy and publisher requirements have been reviewed.

Pass evidence: Snippet controls reflect an intentional policy rather than a plugin default or old test.

11. Check Security, Stability and Page Experience

Confirm HTTPS, valid certificates, stable hosting, usable mobile layouts, readable text and working primary interactions. Review Core Web Vitals, but do not treat a perfect speed score as an AI citation strategy.

The practical question is whether users and crawlers can access the page reliably and complete the intended action.

Pass evidence: No serious security, availability, mobile usability or interaction failures on priority templates.

Part 3: AI Crawler and Retrieval Access

12. Audit OAI-SearchBot Access for ChatGPT Search

OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT Search. A site that opts out will not appear as a source in ChatGPT search answers, though it can still appear as a navigational link.

Review robots.txt, firewall and CDN rules. If inclusion is desired, a basic robots rule may look like this:

13. Distinguish OAI-SearchBot From GPTBot

OpenAI documents different controls for search surfacing and potential model training. OAI-SearchBot is associated with ChatGPT Search, while GPTBot controls are described separately.

Blocking GPTBot does not automatically mean OAI-SearchBot is blocked, and allowing one does not prove the other is allowed. Audit each user agent according to the company’s policy.

14. Check CDN, WAF and Server-Log Access

A robots.txt rule can allow a crawler while the CDN or web application firewall blocks it with a 403, challenge page or rate limit. Review server logs for the user agent, response status and requested URLs.

Validate crawler requests against the platform’s published IP information rather than trusting a user-agent string alone. Do not broadly allow suspicious traffic that merely copies a bot name.

Pass evidence: Legitimate crawler requests reach public content without security controls being weakened.

15. Review Bing Discovery and Content Freshness

Confirm that Bing can crawl and index important URLs. Review Bing Webmaster Tools, sitemaps and IndexNow where suitable. Microsoft says IndexNow can notify participating systems when content is added, updated or removed.

This is useful for pricing, inventory, software, events and other time-sensitive information, but notification does not guarantee indexing or citation.

Pass evidence: Important pages are discoverable in Bing and the update workflow can signal material changes.

Part 4: Site Architecture and Entity Clarity

16. Verify Official Business Facts

Create a source-of-truth record for the official business name, trading names, address, phone numbers, service areas, hours, website, leadership, services and support contacts.

Compare it against the homepage, contact page, footer, structured data, Google Business Profile and major third-party profiles. Conflicting phone numbers or old locations are especially risky because an AI answer may repeat the wrong detail confidently.

Pass evidence: Core facts are current and consistent across authoritative surfaces.

17. Audit Organization or LocalBusiness Information

The website should clearly identify the organization behind the content. Include a useful About page, contact details, service context and legitimate profiles. Local businesses should also review location eligibility, profile ownership, categories and address presentation.

Use Organization or LocalBusiness structured data only when it matches visible information.

Pass evidence: Users and systems can identify the real business, its services and where it operates.

18. Review Author and Expert Identity

High-impact advice should show who created or reviewed it when authorship matters. Audit author names, biographies, relevant experience, credentials, profile pages and article bylines.

Avoid generic biographies that claim expertise without evidence. For medical, legal, financial or technical content, document the review process and the reviewer’s relevant qualification.

Pass evidence: Priority content has a real accountable author or reviewer with relevant, verifiable experience.

19. Clarify Services, Products and Relationships

Check whether each service or product has a stable name, clear description, audience, location, availability and relationship to the organization. Explain integrations, parent brands, branches and practitioners where confusion is possible.

AI systems synthesize from multiple pages. Inconsistent product names or conflicting service descriptions can lead to inaccurate summaries.

Pass evidence: Core offerings are described consistently and connected to the correct business entity.

20. Build Topic Hubs Around Customer Decisions

Group related service, product and editorial pages around real tasks. A useful hub may connect a main service page with cost, process, comparison, eligibility, problem and troubleshooting resources.

Do not build dozens of articles that answer the same intent with slightly different keywords. Consolidate overlap and strengthen the best canonical page.

Pass evidence: Priority topics have a clear main page and supporting resources with distinct purposes.

21. Fix Orphan Pages and Weak Internal Links

Important pages should be reachable through navigation or relevant contextual links. Audit orphan pages, excessive click depth, generic anchor text and links pointing to redirected or duplicate URLs.

Internal links help users and crawlers understand importance and relationships. They also provide a path from informational answers to a service, product or contact action.

Pass evidence: Every priority page has relevant incoming links and a useful next step.

Part 5: Content and Answer Quality

22. Confirm Search Intent and User Task

For each priority page, write the main user task in one sentence. Then compare the page with current traditional results, answer features and AI responses.

A page about “AI SEO audit” should not only define the term. It should help the reader run the audit, record evidence, score problems and choose what to fix first.

23. Add a Direct, Qualified Answer

Answer the main question near the relevant heading. Include the conditions needed to make the answer accurate.

25. Define Terms, Units, Dates and Scope

Audit vague phrases such as “recent,” “affordable,” “nearby,” “fast” and “most businesses.” Replace them with dates, currencies, locations, sample sizes or conditions where the exact context affects meaning.

Do not add false precision. State when a figure is an estimate, benchmark, survey result or company data.

Pass evidence: Users can understand when, where and under what conditions each important claim applies.

26. Match the Format to the Question

Use:

  • numbered steps for ordered processes;
  • tables for exact comparisons;
  • short definitions for “what is” questions;
  • checklists for audits;
  • formulas for calculations;
  • decision criteria for “which is better” questions;
  • warnings and escalation guidance for high-risk topics.

Formatting should improve the user’s decision, not exist only to resemble a featured snippet.

Pass evidence: The page format matches the user task and is usable on mobile.

27. Measure Original Information Gain

Identify what the page contributes beyond the current results. Useful additions may include first-party data, a scoring model, original screenshots, an expert method, a real test, a calculator, a decision tree or a clearly documented case example.

Google recommends “non-commodity” content for generative search information that adds value beyond common summaries.

Pass evidence: At least one meaningful section cannot be reproduced by simply paraphrasing competing pages.

28. Verify Claims and Cite Primary Sources

Create a claim log for statistics, platform requirements, pricing, legal rules, medical guidance and time-sensitive statements. Link to the organization or research team that produced the information whenever possible.

Check the publication date, methodology, geography and whether the source actually supports the sentence. Remove circular citations in which several blogs repeat the same unsourced claim.

29. Audit Freshness and Material Updates

Separate a cosmetic date change from a real review. Check prices, screenshots, product names, feature availability, regulations, people, locations and source links.

Show an updated date when meaningful information has been rechecked. For fast-changing AI-search topics, keep an editorial change log or review schedule.

30. Find Contradictions and Content Decay

Search the domain for old phone numbers, product names, prices, policies and statistics. Compare related articles that may offer conflicting recommendations.

Decide whether to update, merge, redirect or remove weak pages. Leaving obsolete information online creates another source an AI system might summarize.

Pass evidence: High-risk contradictions have an assigned correction or removal plan.

31. Review Titles, Headings and Page Summaries

The title and H1 should identify the topic and user benefit without hype. Headings should describe the section rather than repeat keyword variations. Write a unique meta description that helps a searcher decide whether to visit.

Google says snippets are primarily generated from page content, though the meta description may be used when it is more suitable. Treat the visible content as the main source.

34. Audit Reviews and Third-Party Profiles

Review major profiles that customers and search systems may use to verify the business. Check the name, category, location, services, website, hours and current reviews.

Do not purchase reviews, gate unhappy customers or publish fake community mentions. Google’s 2026 AI-search guidance specifically advises against chasing inauthentic mentions.

Pass evidence: Important third-party profiles are accurate, claimed where possible and supported by genuine feedback.

35. Document First-Hand Expertise

Part 7: Structured Data and Media

37. Validate Relevant Structured Data

Use structured data that matches visible content and a supported page type. Common examples include Organization, LocalBusiness, Person, Article, Product, BreadcrumbList and VideoObject.

Google says there is no special schema required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Its structured-data guidance explains that markup provides explicit clues and can support eligible rich-result features; it does not guarantee appearance.

Check syntax, required fields, factual consistency and canonical URLs. Remove fabricated ratings and invisible content.

40. Review Google’s Generative AI Performance Report

Google introduced a Generative AI performance report in Search Console for AI Overviews and AI Mode. As of August 2026, it is still rolling out to a subset of properties.
